In March and April, the Los Angeles Lakers surged with 16 wins in 18 games, appearing to transform into their best form. It seemed possible LeBron James would remain with the team beyond this season. However, the Lakers now trail the Oklahoma City Thunder 3-0 in the second round of the playoffs, and James’ impending free agency looms.

First, the Lakers must avoid a sweep by winning Game 4 on Monday. James has not consistently met his high standards this series, but despite shooting 7-of-19 in the 131-108 loss in Game 3, he has not performed poorly overall.

After the game, James spoke about not losing hope despite the challenging situation.

“I wouldn’t say I’m angry or disappointed,” James said. “Obviously you’re disappointed in the simple fact of being down 3-0. But we still got life, and that’s all you can ask for. We gotta be much better on Monday. See what happens.”

The Lakers may need a monster performance from James on Monday to keep the series alive. He has not been overly assertive offensively against Oklahoma City, but his pride could drive him to avoid the fourth postseason sweep of his career. He finished Game 3 with 19 points, eight assists, six rebounds and one steal.
